Psalm 133 The Gift of Unity

Psalm 133: The Gift of Unity

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

How good and pleasant it is
when God’s people live together in unity!

It is like precious oil poured on the head,
    running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron’s beard,
down on the collar of his robe.
It is as if the dew of Hermon
    were falling on Mount Zion.
For there the Lord bestows his blessing,
    even life forevermore.

Studying Psalm 133

  • Genre: Wisdom – Teaches practical lessons about life, righteousness, and following God’s law.

Two Illustrations on How Good it is For God’s People to Dwell Together

1. Like Precious Oil. “It is like the precious oil upon the head, Running down on the beard, the beard of Aaron, running down on the edge of his garments.”

The unity of God’s holy people dwelling together is a sweet aroma unlike any other.

2. Like the dew of Mount Hermon

  • Dew in Scripture is viewed as a blessing from the LORD. (Job 38:28, Micah 5:7; Deut.33:13)

The Blessing of Mt Zion

  • Mount Zion is 2510 Ft. above Sea Level. Mt Hermon is much taller, 9,232 ft. above sea level)
    • Despite the height difference, travels to Jerusalem would always say they are going up.
    • Zion was where God dwelled and bestowed blessing on His people.
    • David said at Mt. Zion the LORD bestows his blessing: Life together forevermore.
    • They dwelled together for a purpose.

Q: What was their purpose of dwelling together?

Psalm 122:3-4 (Of David)  “Jerusalem is built as a city that is compact together,4 Where the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, To the Testimony of Israel, to give thanks/praise to the name of the LORD.”
