Song Deep Dive: Psalm 125 (Now and Forevermore)

About Psalm 125

Psalm 125 is a song of confidence in the LORD’s protection. It begins with a vivid image: “As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds His people both now and forevermore.” (Psalm 125:2) Just as Jerusalem was encircled by hills, forming a natural fortress, God’s people are encircled by His steadfast care. The psalm contrasts the security of those who trust in the LORD with the instability of those who turn aside to evil. It is a reminder that while the world may shift and shake, those who trust in the LORD “are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.” (Psalm 125:1) Psalm 125 invites us to rest in the unmovable protection of God, who surrounds His people in every season of life.

Psalm 125

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
which cannot be shaken but endures forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the Lord surrounds his people
    both now and forevermore.

The scepter of the wicked will not remain
over the land allotted to the righteous,
for then the righteous might use
    their hands to do evil.

Lord, do good to those who are good,
to those who are upright in heart.
But those who turn to crooked ways
the Lord will banish with the evildoers.

Peace be on Israel.

Stephen's Thoughts

What a joy and delight it was to sing this song in the studio with my daughter, Ella, and the other kids from our church choir. This song changed quite a bit from where it began. I originally wrote it on the ukulele and imagined it as a simple, campfire-style song. When I introduced it to Ella and asked if she wanted to sing, she added a bluesy vibe. When I tried to adjust it, she said, “No, that’s not how it goes!” She definitely earns a writing credit on this one. The Centerpoint Choir was such a welcome addition, and what a beautiful reminder to our youth that the LORD is always with us, always surrounding us.

Lyrics

Those who trust in the LORD
are like Mount—Mount Zion,
which cannot be shaken
but endures forever.

As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the LORD surrounds His people,
both now and forever—
forevermore.

As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the LORD surrounds His people,
both now and forever—
forevermore.

Both now and forever—
forevermore.
Both now and forever—
forevermore.
